Bun in the Oven Pregnancy Announcement

When Gemma contacted me about having a Bun in the Oven pregnancy announcement photo session, I had no idea what to expect. I love shooting in people’s homes, but kitchens are not always the prettiest, brightest or most spacious locations. But I was willing to give it a go, and I’m so glad I did!

This was such a fun session. We played, tried things, had a laugh and created some lovely images. They could use them in their pregnancy announcement, sure. But they’re also images that capture and celebrate this stage in their lives together. That excitement for the sweet little baby they’ll welcome into their lives. That special feeling of sharing in the most wonderful of secrets. To me, that is where the heart of a pregnancy announcement photo session really is, and I’m so glad I go to document that for them!

I can think of a few reasons why this session is so successful. When you’re aiming for something themed, it can be easy to head into cringy, awkward territory, but honestly I just love this pregnancy announcement session.

  • The kitchen is open with lots of natural light. This made such a difference to the quality and range of photos we could create. And I’ll let into a secret – this isn’t their kitchen! We actually used Gemma’s parents’ kitchen for this session.
  • Gemma’s outfit channeled a 1950s housewife vibe, without it being something that felt like a costume. It suited the bun in the oven concept perfectly and just made everything feel playful.
  • She had organised and pre-prepared props. The baking utensils were out and ready, the ingredients decanted in containers so no bright or ugly branding competed for attention. And that onsie is just adorable!
  • They had fun with this pregnancy announcement idea. We played with the bun in the oven concept and they were both willing to try things. (When he proposed on a trip to New York, knowing how much Gemma appreciates photos, he’d already organised a photographer for an engagement photo session that same afternoon!) They’re a lovely couple and their connection was both a part of the session and came through in the photos.

I hope you enjoy!
