A few years ago (never doubt I am absolutely terrible about sharing sessions promptly!) I had the pleasure of photographing the gorgeous Lilli, of Frocks and Frou Frou, and her lovely family. It was a dream of a photo session, capturing some beautiful everyday moments as loving parents played and interacted with their adored little E. Absolutely where my heart lies!
Lilli is a fashion blogger from way back, although I first discovered her Instagram account which she describes as “Making friends with my body, one outfit at a time.” Her content and perspective resonated with me so I approached her regarding a session.
As someone who is plus-size, I do my damnest to not let my body shape keep me from being in photos and capturing precious moments with my loved ones. Similarly, I want my photo sessions to be a safe space and a source of encouragement for other plus-size individuals, showing them that everyone deserves to be seen and celebrated in pictures, regardless of their size.
It’s not up to me to tell you how to feel about your body, but I will tell you this: you are worthy. Worthy of being captured in photographs, deserving of recording lasting memories that highlight the joy and love in your life. You matter.
When I approached Lilli about a photo session that I could use when writing about body image and plus-size family photos she readily agreed.
These are Lilli’s lovely and encouraging words on the value of photography, swiped off her Instagram.
A couple of weeks ago my little family enjoyed an absolutely delightful photo session with the lovely Delanie of andsoidonforget.
The album just landed in my inbox, and I’ve had a wonderful time revisiting the fun of the afternoon through Delanie’s gorgeous photos.
Every time I turn my back it seems like E grown another inch, learns a new skill, becomes more and more a grown-up little boy. I am so thankful to have these memories of us right at this moment captured so beautifully.
I think women – especially those of us who struggle with body image – often shy away from having photos taken. And being a parent, you always seem to be behind the camera, not in front of it.
But photos are powerful, and important – not just for you, but for your loved ones too. Not just photos of birthdays, weddings, special occasions, but photos of ordinary day to day life: cooking, playing, reading books.
Take selfies, ask your partner to capture simple moments, and don’t underestimate how much investing in quality photography is worth.
You’d be surprised how little you notice a double chin, a squinty smile, a wobbly tummy, when a photo reveals the love and joy radiating out of every fiber in your being – a good photographer will do that for you!
